Union of Comoros

The Union of the Comoros (the Comoros) is a French-speaking African nation comprising four islands (Grande Comoros, Moheli, Anjouan and Mayotte) located at the entry point of the Mozambique Channel in North-western Madagascar. The capital, Moroni, is located on the largest island, Grande Comore. The total surface area of Comoros is 1,800 km ², with an estimated population of 895,215 as of Sunday, 21 November, 2021. The population density is 467 per Km² (1,210 people per mi²), with a population growth rate of 2.21%. The official languages are Arabic, French and Comorian.

The Comoros was a member of the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG), an English language-based Financial Action Task Force Style Regional Body. The country was granted observer status in GIABA in December 2012 due to language and other considerations. The Authority of Heads of States and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) approved the candidacy of the Comoros for full membership of GIABA in December 2015, subject to adherence to its obligations under the GIABA Statutes, the ECOWAS Treaty and the Protocol. Comoros became a full member of GIABA following the execution of a Memorandum of Understanding with GIABA on 17 November, 2017.
